SAMSUNG TO MAKE CAMERA BETTER THAN HUMAN EYE, WHY?
Maybe you don’t know,
but the human eyes have a resolution of 500 megapixels. Humans have already made
mobile devices with up to 108-megapixel camera sensor. So what does Samsung stand
to gain by aiming at producing devices with a 600-megapixel camera sensors?
Samsung has been
able to take a lot of giant leaps in the industry in the past couple of years. They
went from producing devices with 12MP camera sensor to 64MP all the way to
108MP within the last 5 years. Yet, the company is aiming at making camera
sensors 5 times better than what is currently in the market. Don’t bet your
money against them?
According to Yongin
Park, EVP, Head of Sensor Business Team, System LSI Business for Samsung, “Most cameras today can only take pictures
that are visible to the human eye at wavelengths between 450 and 750 nanometers
(nm). Sensors able to detect light wavelengths outside of that range are hard
to come by, but their use can benefit a wide range of areas.”
“For example, image sensors equipped for
ultraviolet light perception can be used for diagnosing skin cancer by
capturing pictures to showcase healthy cells and cancerous cells in different
colors,” said Park. “Infrared image
sensors can also be harnessed for more efficient quality control in agriculture
and other industries. Somewhere in the future, we might even be able to have
sensors that can see microbes not visible to the naked eye.”
This research
will bring lots of benefits to the health care, agriculture, and security. Consider when a 600-megapixel camera is used
with 5G technology, it will make possible a lot of seemly impossible tasks like advanced remote diagnosis of human, animal, and plant diseases. It will also be deployed into warfare and precision targeting
