MTN LUMOS SOLAR INVERTER - CHEAP AND RELIABLE ELECTRICITY FOR YOUR HOME
I remember
sometimes last year when there was so much noise on MTN having its own brand of
condoms. It was denied then by the telecom giant but we all know MTN is always
available and looking to invest in every area of the economy. Now, a brand of
MTN Nigeria branded solar panels and inverters are available for purchase.
The gadget is from
Lumos and only partner with MTN for easy of recharging. The good thing about
this system is that it's solar powered, which means you don't have to wait for
electricity before you can use it at all. Although you still have to pay for
subscription fees which are pretty affordable.
The mobile
electricity can be used to power your lights, cellphones, fans, computers, TVs
and other small electronic devices but not for anything that needs more than
12V.
The Solar
powered inverter comes with 5 years warranty.
The Lumos - MTN Power Pack consists of:
Large 80W solar
panel unit and solar cable
Solar control
unit with 8 sockets DC 12V max
USB mobile phone
adapter
2 powerful LED
bulbs
Easy
self-installation mounting kit
The Cost of Recharging:
For the
Recharging cost, you can either Recharging the device for
3 days at N133
per day and a total price of N400
N121 for 7 days
with total price of N850
N110 for 30 days
with total price of N3, 300.
The system is
linked to your MTN SIM to make Recharging easier and convenient.
The device is
currently sold for just N15, 000 at any MTN office close to you or just visit
Lumos website.

DeleteThis is a very good development, I saw this product at MTN Center in Offa, honestly, this is a beginning end to darkness in our homes, I knew this will be very efficient and economical than the stupid incessant power supply with exorbitant bills.
ReplyDeleteI want to buy this but want to enquire more. can it be charging while also in use?
ReplyDeleteYES... IT CAN

ReplyDeleteCan 3,300 last for the whole month or is it charged on pay as you go basis?
ReplyDeleteWhen I pay N15000, I take delivery of the Inverter with suckets, and the solar panel which will be mounted in the sun. What is the recharge money for? In a year I will be required to pay N3,300 X 12 = N39,600 for 800W power supply! This will not power the fridge, nor the electric iron, nor the air-conditioner, nor the bore-hole water pump. If you use this in the night, it cannot last till midnight. It is okay for a small office that opens in the day with one fan, computer and energy saving lightening points. Kai! this is daylight robbery.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughtful observation, i have been thinking of the same thing. the recharging is unnecessary and it is a way of extorting. Will MTN be paying Nigeria for the sun they are using to charge the solar panel?
DeleteGod bless u my brother, exactly what i've been thinking. What are we paying mtn for? They just want to rip nigerians off again!
DeleteThe solar panel is given to you on lease. We all know that a panel costs much more tha n Mtn is giving it out. The monthly Recharge is like a repayment plan. A panel costs hundreds of thousands in some cases. This is done this way so that an average Joe will be able to afford it. I think it is a good initiative!
DeleteNIGERIANS SHOULD PLEASE LEAVE THIS LOAD FOR MTN BEFORE WE ARE HOOKED AGAIN LIKE THE VERY MTN MOBILE AND MULTI CHOICE ..GOTV AND DSTV. WHERE ARE THE BUSINESS GUYS IN NAIJA? GO TO CHINA AND GET THEM FOR US SINCE OUR BLIND RULERS ONLY CARE ABOUT THEMSELVES.
Delete@Anonymous. What if you bought a iPhone x. Won't you do sub? Or what is the use of the phone without sub. At list let's appreciation them for what they did. Besides its not a must you sub it for a year. Na them born you?.
DeleteMTN actually leases the whole system to you, and the 3,300 you pay monthly is for you to have full ownership. you pay for 5 years, and you have full ownership
ReplyDeleteThis is robbery

Delete@sophia. 80W panel is about N22k to 25k. How can you say panels cost hundreds of thousands?. I work in an inverter company and can tell you that in terms of capacity this is crazily expensive. An 850VA inverter which powers your tv, fans (2 to 3), up to 6 energy lights, even a blender cost far less than 200k
DeleteHow many years warranty do does that cost less than 200k give? So far I've been seeing 1yr, have you seen any that is more than 2yrs? If you have please let me know
DeleteEven with batteries and Installation? Hmmnnn! Issokay o... Which one your government do? If Nigeria gave us Light, will we be here? Pls dont kill another man's market with mouth but find a way to sell your own if urs is better
Deleteyou are right this is daylight robbery. even in the day, it can not charge 100% here and with 100% charged, it can not work from 7 pm to 6 pm. this is just daylight robbery.
ReplyDeleteHave you used it? How do you know it doesn't last more than an hour when fully charged?
DeleteThis is good development from Mtn , that means we will not wait for Nigeria any longer. God will continue to give you people knowledge and understanding Amen. We heard it before this Mtn solar was #15000 but. now is #15700, before the subscription was #133 per day but. now is #220. Sir Ma, Why is it like that and What is the assurance that we will enjoy this Mtn solar?
ReplyDeleteIs this now in Lagos

ReplyDeleteso after buying d device, i hv to pay for electricity provided by d sun? pple r just stupid
ReplyDeleteDo the math. Go to market and check how much a solar panel dat size(80w) cost and all other auxiliaries attached to the product and see if #15000 can buy it. Ur monthly subscription is mostly to pay off the lease.
Delete@ OBIREH EFETOBORE, NA YOU FOOL AND STUPID PASS. AS NA SUN PROVIDE ELECTRICITY WHY YOU NOR COLLECT AM YOURSELF

Deleteit just doesn't make sense to own this Lumos thing!
Deleteexactly o....after buying the device...what exactly are we paying for again? that sounds like exploitation.
ReplyDeleteHmmm is good to hear it. But device that can not work for 8hrs. And it can not work at night is crazy why did I need light. If is charged in afternoon and I need light from 8pm to 6am and is not working that's too Bad. Because almost everybody need light to sleep just fan alone. Thanks
ReplyDeleteNot even buying an inverter with one battery of 100ah or 200ah can be used for 8hrs, you will need 2 batteries of 200ah to use for just 6hrs. I have done a lot of research, none of these alternative power last longer except you go as far as buying up to 4 batteries and if using solar, you buy up more than 1panel before it can give out power energy than that of MTN, and this is more an extremely expensive, with a battery warranty of just 1yr
DeleteI pray 🙏 may the company stand on what the said without failure and increase their efforts especially to reduce the cost for the common man 👨
ReplyDeleteThanks.
If one wants buy it at once without paying any subscription, how much is it?
ReplyDeleteI need more clarification on this especially the subscription matter
ReplyDeleteI need more clarification on this especially the subscription matter
ReplyDeleteWhat of if I fail to subscribe? What's the subscription for? Is it not sun generating the power
ReplyDeleteYou're paying for the solar panel that converts sunlight to electricity. The solar panel is man made and it should be paid for.
DeleteI think representative from the company need to explain to us about it and where we can see it physically for more enquiries
ReplyDeleteThis idea is a bright one but too costly. The MTN mobile electricity device is designed in a way that you can only Access the solar recharged power for your consumption only through your network which is the means of paying for the power. It is costly because what prepaid metered customers consume every month from NEPA is not up to N2,000 yet the light can be used overnight reliably to power fan, refrigerator, AC, even pressing iron. If MTN can increase the capacity of the solar panel and reduce the price of Access to the solar recharged power, I think this would be a very nice idea
ReplyDeleteMoreover, I never knew the device has an initial cost price of N15000. If this is paid, there is no need for subsequent recharge fees. Solar energy is given free..why paying for it? MTN should review this extortive marketing plan
DeleteI just don't understand the issue of recharging! Are we making calls with the device? How can a solar generator be recharged for crying out loud ! mtn u guzs should think of something else to give out! renewable energy is meant to be maintenance free!
ReplyDeletefor gullible Nigerians ofcourse. I can set up the entire device with less than 70k: 80watt solar panel 22K on Konga, 300watt inverter 10k, 10Amp solar charge controller 5k (on konga), 50Ah bateries 23K, get some 5watt AC bulbs 600 each (depending on how many you want, 5 is Ok for 3K). Toal is still just around 60k. These MTN guys think they are clever. Rubbish
Deletegive me your contact details abeg
DeleteGood development
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get it in lagos
ReplyDeleteFor some reason,Tidasolution just went silent.Dis is bad for business.
ReplyDeleteThis is where we all as Nigerians get it all wrong.. Are we suppose to be paying for renewable energy gotten freely from the sun??? Hell No... We as individuals ought to have known how to create free solar electricity by now.. But minister of education will never add that Into our curriculum ....see as 80Watt dey shark all of una ..kai... We don suffer for Nigeria hand

ReplyDeleteI thought the solar light is for 24 hours?
ReplyDeleteWe people don't want to pay for anything here. Even the sole called advanced countries, people still pay for all basic social amenities. It's okay if u say that the subscription fees is high, but saying that 'u are not suppose to pay for any subscription after buying it because it is powered by solar' is a little bit absurd. Think of the time invested in it and no company will give u a solar inverter for N15,000 and allow you to pay the balance in instalments
ReplyDeleteyou said (Think of the time invested in it and no company will give u a solar inverter for N15,000 and allow you to pay the balance in instalments) so if you want to instalment, for how long will you pay? at least you know when you stop paying, please dont be fooled.
Deletesubscription of #3,300 is too much for a month, likewise d solar inverter will nt work in d night, so what is d essence of having it in d house, so it does nt makes sense. my advise is to work on modality of panel solar, so that it will be useful in d night at least frm 8pm till 6am
ReplyDeleteMay be na to Occupy space for night the thing dey for. but make I no bad mouth the product
Deleteits a positive development and right way of thinking but the thing be say na we youths suppose dey spear head this type of things. We no need to wait until NUC put am for our academic curriculum before we go know how to develop things like this ourselves
the knowledge is every where, you tube is now so generous with information and there are countless numbers of video tutorials that our youths can spend their idle time on just to learn and research on this type of new technology. Our highly technically inclined igboh brothers from Alaba where una dey.
The Music industry is a perfect example. As we youths enter the industry, the level change. Now Nigerian music is number one all over Africa.
I see the same vision for science and technological advancement. I cannot expect my 80 years old father and his generation to provide constant electricity for me ooooooo !!!!!
Techvilla, please for someone to always trust information posted by you. pls do them in all sincerity. pls tell the MTN office that sell this device for N15,000 for us to pick. The selling price is 26K and most MTN office don't have in stock. you will only be directed to somewhere else. And after paying 26k for device that I will be paying 3300 monthly for 5 years it's complet ripoff .that is 3300x12x5=198,000 too much of a ripoff
ReplyDeletePls this post was from septembet 2016... check inflation sir...
DeleteThis device is a Rip OFF!
DeleteI'm happy I read the comments.
ReplyDeleteMTN,profiteering off Nigerians since 2001.
And I was believing they had a change of heart.
good day friends, mtn has to reduce their cost cus they are using free sun light.
ReplyDeletePricing is not much a liability compared to the amount we spent on smallest Tiger generators. On the average plan, daily bill is just #128 if you opt for annual subscription. The real question we should bothers ourselves with is the capacity and the hours it can sustain us at the defined power consumption level. It's a good initiative and with time, other providers will brings similar developments to create positive markets competition.
ReplyDeleteGood point bro
DeleteHahahaha this is a typically n direct stealing from mtn to nigerians at large
ReplyDeleteHow can one pay for such that cannot exceed for 3hrs on 12volts fan alone without the 2led light bulb gush nigeria is truely a lawless state n a dumping ground
This is a garget i know and bought late 2014 below 22k and no tariff now mtn went n added its stealing innovation of pay as u use ur naturally God given sun light
could it be possible that they have upgraded the system?
DeleteIn fact, Texas consumers enjoy the 3rd cheapest rates in the country and this is due to the price caps placed on wholesale electricity.

ReplyDeleteWhat's peoply dnt understand is dat, the effort made by mtn officials to erase blackout in Nigeria such than affording it won't be limited to the rich alone is by recharging the system. By so doing, they'll be able to get thier profit on the device else, if that device is to be sold once! Without you recharging it, it's only d rich dat'll be able to afford it. Though using solar power is best with the Following advatages over Generator; no noice pollution, no fueling, no cost of running, no servicing. No air pollution etc. Bur getting it @a start is costly. For example I just installed 4kva UPS to one of my client who live in government estate where they have Ligth @least 15hrs a day, without solar, only the UPS and battery cost him 650K. Now to talk of getting solar and charge controller, the overall cost will be getting to 1.2M.
ReplyDeleteIf mtn should embark on this types in which once you get it, you have itj as there won't be any cost of running(Recharging it), we'll discover that it only the rich one that'll be able to afford it. That is the simple scople behind recharging their system(mtn lumos). Thanks
Are you rich or poor?
DeleteMr oluwole Amos ,if you dont have an idea about materials in the market dont speak under assumptions ,how can Nigerians b paying foreign company for sun that God has shine on us to see during d day and at night it cant last 2-3hrs men dis is daylight robbery
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteMTN cannot run unprofitable business, so far the device cannot maintain other load except fan and bulb and it will not serve 24/7 as they claim, its a fraud and unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteFrom the look of things and having read all the reasonable and sensible comments and contributions of my fellow noble Nigerians concerning this very product coming from MTN and Lumos, I think personally I cannot pay 198,000 in five years for something that will not power my AC, Fridge, Pressing Iron and even Water Heater... Its on the high side for something that cannot last from 8pm - 6am. 12V is too small for such price. Besides, why paying for something that is powered by natural element (Sun)?. Its true 80W panel is expensive but it would have been better for the promoting partners to calculate all cost and see a way of subsidizing it before selling to the willing public. 26k for the kit and 198,000 five years subscription is equal to #224,000... That's huge!!! #224,000 can give one a better offer with greater power output even in 10yrs time looking at other sources.
ReplyDeleteJust making common sense...
this is a BIG slap on Nigerians ooo. it doesn't make sense paying for natural endowment so far a gadget to provide power is being bought. anyway, it's not mtn's fault but our Oloriburuku leaders that accept this rash all bcoz of their pocket. this doesn't favor Nigerians at all but slavery.
ReplyDeleteIf ur government first of all give you light, mtn and luminous inverters won't even be thinking of this.
Deletesay no to mtn inverter

In as much as I agreed with others that the price and recharging of this product is a little bit high, I think we should thank the MTN for their effort at least to take us out of the incessant power outage of the DISCOs. Some communities don't have powers for days and those that have are paying exhorbitanly. At least, the MTN as a corporate body in Nigeria is trying to put smiles on our faces, what is government doing about the energy sector since 1999, till now we are yet to generate more than 4000mgh, what a shame.

The business model is finen however, I will NOT put my money in it nor encourage anyone to purchase it. It is outrageously expensive and a ripoff to use the MTN solar whether for 15k or 26k. For the price per watt produced by their device, you're better off BY FAR using ur diesel or petrol generator or inverter/ battery combo. Do they expect me to replace all my appliances, fans, light, TVs to 12VDC compliant ones? Even your regular laptop will not accept 12VDC, that's false claims. Although, I am a renewable energy proponent, this is daylight robbery. I'd urge you to stay away from product cos it will end up a junk in one corner of your house and it will not last 3yrs not to talk of 5yrs they expect you to pay it off. #scam

DeleteCan I charge my Lumos box with my generator?
ReplyDelete5 August 2017 at 01:02
ReplyDeleteNice analysis. People should know that to get the solar panel and the box outright will be unavoidable for average Nigerians. So the monthly recharge package is what the company will use to get back the investment and profit.
Mr. Anonymous did not consider the cost of inverter in his calculation. Inverter is about 90,000 on konga. This brings the total to N217,000.00 . Also the cost of installation by the technician cannot be less than N30,000.00. Add this to N217,000, and it becomes N247,000.00.
ReplyDeleteNote however that none of these materials has more than a year or two warranty. In most cases, from experience, it is the battery that first start having issues and then 10 hours becomes 5hrs and ultimately 2 or 3 hours.
In my opinion, the 5 year warranty provided by MTN Lumos is worth the money itself. Give or take the device is OK as is.
I have read comments like "how can they charge us for the sunshine provided freely by God".......that makes me laugh......We are actually paying for our collective ignorance. Since we cannot plug our devices to sunlight directly, we are paying the Israeli technicians that have the technical knowhow.....So in the interim, we keep paying shikena!!!
You hit the nail on the head, you have said it all. I have tried estimating other options that is more than 60W, they are extremely expensive for the poor and given just 1 yr warranty while others that seem very cheap are also 1yr. But MTN are ready to bear the cost of maintenance during a period of 5yrs. This makes a lot of sense to me

ReplyDeleteHaving read all the comments carefully, analyzing and evaluating the whole process. lets do some maths. #4500/month for 12 months is #54000 Naira and you have to pay foor how long, say three years, which means you are paying #162000 Naira.
ReplyDeleteTo me that is a whole lot of money for something that cannot power a higher level of equipment and its a rip off. total rip off. also, no battery lasts for 5 years. you change it at least every year. thats also an additional cost because the more you recharge a battery is shorter the life cycle becomes after a number of recharge series which is as per manufacturers discretion which is also inputed into considerable thoughts before and during production.
lastly, policy changes as we have over the years have been migrated either by cajole or forcefully from on prepaid plan to another. i see a breach of policy agreement.
An also five years from now is too big a time for revolution in technology. what i mean is that very soon, a new invention or technology will surface and this will be scrapped and you will be forced , compelled and left with no choice than to keep the device away and aside.
